Pakistan: Two more Congo virus cases emerge

Congo virus cases

Two more cases of  Congo Virus(Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, or CCHF) have been reported in Pakistan, raising concerns over the spread of this potentially deadly viral infection.

  Important Details:

1.Location: The new cases were detected in Karachi, an area susceptible to the virus that has seen several cases reported in recent years, especially around the time of Eid-ul-Adha. More animal casualties will occur.

2.Patient Status: The patient diagnosed with  Congo Virus has been hospitalized and is in isolation to prevent further infection.

 3. Public Health Response: Authorities are intensifying efforts to trace contacts of  infected people and ensure that appropriate isolation measures are taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

 What is  Congo Virus?

  •  CCHF is a tick-borne viral disease caused by the Nairovirus, which is transmitted by bites from infected ticks or contact with  blood or body fluids of infected animals. It is transmitted from livestock to humans.
  • Symptoms include high fever, muscle pain, dizziness,  bleeding from different parts of the body (hemorrhagic syndrome), and can lead to severe complications and even death.

 Risk of infection in Pakistan:

  • Congo virus outbreaks are common in Pakistan, especially during seasons of increased animal handling for rituals such as Eid-ul-Adha, and in areas where livestock farming is practiced.
  • Livestock markets, slaughterhouses and areas with inadequate tick control measures are high-risk zones.

Prevention measures:

  • Health authorities recommend strict measures, including: - Wearing protective clothing for anyone working in close contact with animals or handling livestock.
  • Regular tick prevention programmes for animals and farm workers.
  •  Ensure proper handling and disposal of animal waste.
  •  Public awareness campaigns to educate people about the risks and prevention strategies of  Congo virus.

Public Health Concerns:

The emergence of new cases highlights the need for vigilance and strong public health measures to stop the spread of the virus. Given the high mortality rate of CCHF (up to 30-40% in severe cases), rapid identification, isolation, and treatment of affected individuals is critical to contain the outbreak.
