Israeli attack kills 40 more in Gaza ‘safe zone’
AL MAWASI: An Israeli strike on Tuesday on Al Mawasi humanitarian zone in Gaza’s southern province of Khan Yunis, killed 40 people, Palestinian civil defence agency said.
On September 10, 2024, an Israeli airstrike targeted the "safe zone" of Al Mawashi, a displaced Palestinian camp in the southern Gaza Strip.
At least 41 people were killed and more than 60 were injured. The attack struck tents near Khan Yunis, where displaced civilians had taken refuge after receiving orders from the Israeli military to go to the humanitarian area.
The airstrike left a large crater and many victims remained trapped under rubble, making rescue efforts difficult.
The Israeli military claimed that the attack hit Hamas officials hiding in the area, including leaders involved in intelligence and air operations.
However, local witnesses and Hamas denied the presence of militants in the camp and accused Israel of carrying out the massacre.
Among the victims were civilians, particularly women and children, and the destruction caused significant civilian casualties and further displacement.
The incident is part of a broader conflict between Israel and Hamas in which heavy fighting has been ongoing since October 2023, resulting in widespread destruction and numerous civilian deaths in Gaza. Tens of thousands have died since the conflict began.
