Another suspect arrested over 12-year-old girl’s rape, murder

Karachi police on Monday said they arrested a second suspect in connection with the gang rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl during an “encounter”.

On August 25, the body of a minor girl was found in a bag near a garbage dump in  Lucky Star area. An autopsy  revealed that she had been raped . Last week, police announced the arrest of the main suspect in the crime. "A wanted suspect who sustained injuries following an encounter with police  on Abdul Sattar Edhi Street, Ministry of Defence Phase 8 was arrested," Deputy Inspector General South Syed Asad Raza said today. He did not say whether the suspect had already sustained injuries or sustained injuries during the pursuit.  Noting that the suspect was wanted in the "rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl" case, DIG Raza said that after the crime, "he dumped the body near Lucky Star".

Regarding last week's arrest, the DIG said, "The suspect's accomplices have already been taken into custody." Raza said the  case has been registered at Sadar police station. DIG Raza had earlier said that the man arrested last week was the main suspect and was a security guard at Borough Market near Cantonment station. However, two of his  accomplices, who worked at  Shalimar bus stand, are still at large, the official said.

DIG Raza also said that the investigating authorities have identified the victim as a member of the Hindu community who lived under Lili Bridge with her mother. He said  the girl and her mother had come from Sukkur to look after a sick relative about 20 days before the incident. Her mother also fell ill and visited Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment on the evening of August 24.

She returned to the bridge  around 2 am but could not find her daughter. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah have taken notice of the incident and have directed the police to arrest the perpetrators involved.

According to police surgeon Sumaiya Saeed, who heads the forensic teams at the city's three major hospitals, 522 women and minor girls were sexually abused in Karachi alone in 2023. More than 4,040 cases of physical violence against women were reported in the same year, and 22 bodies were exhumed on court orders, she  said.

Child Abuse Cases in the Country  Data released by Sahil, an NGO working for child welfare, in March this year revealed that  a total of 4,213 cases of child abuse occurred in 2023 in all four provinces and the Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

A gender analysis of the data revealed that  of the total reported cases, 2,251 (53 percent) of the victims were girls and 1,962 (47 percent) were boys. The reported ages indicate that children in the 6-15 age group are the most vulnerable to abuse, with more cases reported among boys than girls in this age group. Moreover, children between 0 and 5 years of age were also sexually abused.

The  category of perpetrators revealed that acquaintances remain the most frequently involved in child sexual abuse, in addition to relatives, family members, strangers and female accomplices.

The geographical breakdown statistics show that out of the total 4,213 reported cases, 75% were reported from Punjab, 13% from Sindh, 7% from Islamabad Capital Territory, 3% from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 2% from Balochistan, AJK and UK.
