In Sindh, public school students are facing major challenges due to non-availability of free textbooks even though the new academic year started two weeks ago on August 15, 2024. This is a recurring issue, which was exacerbated this year by heavy rains that caused delays in paperwork and disrupted the distribution process.
Parents and students, especially those from low-income groups, have been severely affected as they depend on these free resources for their education. Despite being promised at the time of admission, many students are yet to receive the textbooks they need for their studies. This situation has led to protests in various districts, including Hyderabad, with parents and students voicing their dissatisfaction.
The Sindh Textbook Board (STBB) and the Ministry of Education are locked in a blame game with each side blaming the other for the delays. While the STBB claims to have delivered the books to the Ministry of Education warehouses, the Ministry of Education reports that these warehouses remain empty.
As a result, some schools have received only incomplete sets of textbooks, especially for Urdu and Sindhi as languages of instruction, while English-speaking schools have received none. This ongoing issue has disrupted the education of thousands of students and has led to calls for immediate action to resolve the distribution issue.
