MAIDUGURI: At least 48 people were killed on Sunday in a fuel tanker truck explosion following a collision with another vehicle in north-central Nigeria, the state’s disaster management agency said.

At least 48 people were killed in a tragic  tanker truck explosion in Niger State, Nigeria, on September 8, 2024. The explosion occurred when a tanker truck collided with another vehicle carrying tourists and livestock.

 The collision sparked a fire that engulfed several vehicles, including a crane  and a pickup truck, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. 

Local authorities, including the Niger State Disaster Management Authority, confirmed that they are still working to clear the scene and assess  the damage.

 The incident comes amid a fuel price surge in Nigeria. A recent 39% increase in gasoline prices has led to shortages and long lines at gas stations across the country.
