39 killed in multiple armed attacks in Pakistan’s Balochistan

On August 26, 2024, at least 39 people were killed in a series of coordinated attacks in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province. These attacks were carried out by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and targeted mostly Punjabis.

One of the most brutal incidents occurred on a main road in Musak Khair district, where militants stopped a vehicle and executed 23 people on the spot. The BLA claimed responsibility and said the operation was targeted at security personnel, although civilians were among the victims. The violence further spread to other districts, including Bolan and Kalat, where militants detonated explosives on a railway bridge and attacked local security forces, causing further casualties.

Such militant activity is resurgent in Balochistan, a province long plagued by  ethnic, sectarian and separatist violence,  exacerbated by regional instability following the Taliban's return  to power in neighbouring Afghanistan.
