KARACHI: The Meteorological Department has forecast up to 200 mm of rain in Karachi and up to 500 mm in other cities of the province, leaving authorities on edge. They have taken emergency measures to manage the potential risk of flooding in the city and have alerted all key departments and directed them to remain vigilant during the four-day forecast period.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a high-level meeting where Pakistan Meteorological Department officials briefed them on the forecast of heavy rains in many cities of Sindh, including Karachi.
The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Sukkur Mayor Arsalan Shaikh, Chief Minister Asif Haider Shah and army and navy officials.
The CM was informed that over 500 mm of rain is expected in Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allah Yar during the four-day rainy period (August 27-30), while Karachi is expected to receive up to 500 mm of rainfall during the same period. Metropolitan Railway officials said in the meeting that heavy rains may cause flooding in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Dadu, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad and Sanghar districts.
The Chief Minister was informed that heavy rains could cause flooding in Sukkur, Larkana, Kambal Shahdakot, Shikarpur and Jacobabad districts, while strong winds could cause damage to buildings, electrical systems, solar panels and old trees. Shah called on all local government bodies, district administrations and irrigation departments to intervene promptly in case of emergency.
Steps taken to clean city’s storm drains
Measures taken to clean storm drains in the city Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani informed the gathering that his ministry has taken measures to clean Karachi's main storm water drains.
He said sewerage systems in other major cities are also being maintained to withstand the expected rainfall.
Mayor Wahab said the cities have been provided with the necessary machinery to clean the drains. He added that the Karachi Water Supply and Sewerage Board is also actively working to keep the sewerage system functioning.
He said machines to pump out water in case of waterlogging in low-lying areas have also been provided by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and others.
The Chief Minister also instructed the Chief Secretary to take necessary measures to prevent people from entering the sea.
He also instructed the Fisheries Department to provide necessary advice to fishermen so that they can take necessary precautions during the forecast period.
The Chief Minister was informed that the PDMA's stocks include tents, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, blankets, mosquito nets for animals, water coolers, jerry cans and hygiene kits, which will be sent to the districts in case of emergency and there is sufficient stock.
He also instructed the irrigation department to continue monitoring the LBODs and their systems on the right and left banks of the river so that the situation can be brought under control.
The Chief Minister has set up a rain emergency hotline at the Chief Minister's Office (numbers 021-99207349 and 99207568) and urged the people of the state to lodge complaints with the civic authorities for assistance.
