On August 23, 2024, Pakistan Police succeeded in killing Bashir Shah, the main suspect in a deadly ambush  in the Katcha area of Rahim Yar Khan. The ambush by bandits left at least 12 policemen dead and several  injured or missing.

The attack involved heavily armed bandits who attacked the police convoy with rocket-propelled grenades after one of the police vehicles was disabled. The area, known as a hotbed of banditry, poses challenges for law enforcement due to its remote riverine terrain. Following the attack, police authorities from Punjab and Sindh launched a joint operation  that resulted in a retaliatory attack that left Bashir Shah dead and  several accomplices injured. The attack  sparked widespread outrage and led state and provincial  governments  to announce increased efforts to combat such gangs.
